Horse Arnica or Arnica for Human Use?
“Horse Arnica”, “horse formula”, “equine power”: these expressions have become increasingly common on the packaging and in the advertising of Arnica-based gels, creams and massage products.
The message conveyed to consumers is immediate: if a product is powerful enough for a horse’s muscles, then it should be even more effective on humans.
But is that really the case?
In some cases, the reference to horses is simply a marketing choice. In others, however, the product may actually have been formulated and marketed for use on animals and, for this very reason, should not automatically be considered suitable for application on human skin.
Let’s therefore look at where this association comes from and what should really be considered when choosing an Arnica gel.
Let’s also look at the real differences and why a product associated with horses is not necessarily stronger, more effective or more suitable for humans.
Why do people talk about Horse Arnica?
Horses have always been associated with concepts such as strength, endurance, speed and muscular power.
Using the image of a horse, its name, or expressions that refer to the equestrian world can therefore immediately convey the idea of a particularly powerful or intense product.
Consumers may instinctively think:
“If it is used on such a large and muscular animal, it must be even more powerful on humans.”
This association, however, is mainly a matter of communication and marketing.
The presence of a horse on the packaging does not, in itself, represent:
a quality certification;
a higher percentage of Arnica;
greater effectiveness;
greater safety;
a necessarily more concentrated formula.
A reference to horses therefore does not, on its own, provide any concrete information about the product’s composition or the actual amount of Arnica it contains.
So, is Horse Arnica really stronger?
Not necessarily.
The wording “for horses” does not indicate how much Arnica is actually present in the formulation, nor does it prove that the product is more concentrated.
A product intended for animals could, for example, contain a lower amount of Arnica than a cosmetic gel formulated for human use.
Likewise, two products that both feature the word “Arnica” on their packaging may have very different compositions and characteristics.
For this reason, when evaluating an Arnica gel, it is more useful to consider its formulation, the declared amount of Arnica and, above all, its actual intended use, rather than simply focusing on the name or image shown on the packaging.
Why KALAHARI does not use the wording “for horses”
We do not want to use potentially misleading expressions to describe our product. Instead, we prefer to communicate its real characteristics clearly and transparently.
